There are certain dangers with low carbing which should be noted... with long term use, kidney damage, muscle wasting (we NEED carbs to fuel our bodies) which means lower metabolism etc. I know someone who GAINED... 50 lbs on the low carb diet (after they lost like 30!). Ask any nutritionist and they will say that the best thing about low carbing is that most folks cannot stay on it for any length of time.

Sharon Mevsimler, billed as the UK's "fattest woman" died recently. Interestingly enough most of the news stories either don't mention her weight loss surgery she had a couple of months ago or if they do, only mention it at the end of the article.

Adults who have suffered sexual abuse as a child often use weight gain as a form of protection. This is not to say every overweight adult may have been abused. For those of us struggling with weight since childhood, the issues are deeper than we are just too lazy or stupid to control ourselves.

In the latest from (who else) the ASBMS (the professional organization for bariatric surgeons), they presented a study in which they compared the records of 587 gastric bypass patients to 189 patients who were eligible for surgery but did not have it because insurance had denied them.

Grace, who had a takedown from her gastric bypass, last year, explained that she still suffered repercussions (it's not really reversible - they can just reconnect the bypassed bowel and bypassed stomach).

I kind of educated a "civilian" today - I mentioned a friend who was of size, attending school on the internet as a nice alternative to the antics of the zoo known as High School and she said "Oh but the school has a phys ed program - maybe that would help ... you know (dot dot dot)..."

I just got "unfriended" in facebook this AM because someone's hot button issue was feeling that Weight Watchers is a "fraudulent corporation," something which I disagreed with.

The Obamas are seemingly new territory for America's view of the White House. I'm reminded of the Kennedy years. Kennedy was a first in many ways. He was young. He was the first Catholic. He had young children in the White House. His ideas and focus were reflective of a country ready for something different after the post-war, anti-Communist, bent towards conservatism that had dominated the previous decade. And he had a beautiful wife.

I sincerely believe that Michelle Obama has the absolute best of intentions with her war on childhood obesity. Unfortunately, good intentions and $5 will get you a non-fat latte and not much else.

Two hundred and seventy-five pounds. That's what the nurse said when she weighed me in the other day. I thought: that seems about right to me. It seems small to me on the grand scale of what I COULD weigh. You really should lose weight. Her voice said: "You really ought to do something about that."
