Anti-Obesity Group defends Marie Claire fatties blog, Mike & Molly just fat gags
As if it isn't bad enough that a narrow minded anorexic writer slammed the new hit series Mike & Molly on Marie Claire's blog by admitting that she was "grossed out" by the "fatties", now the Action Against Obesity organization has come to the defense of the author.
If she had written the exact same article saying she was grossed out by two anorexics making out on television everyone would have applauded. She said what a lot of people feel and never want to admit.
I think we all agree it was insensitive. She was being honest, she was being unguarded. Insensitive yes, her word choice was sophomoric.
The blog she's referring to, posted by Maura Kelly, was brutally honest about her feelings regarding the new hit show, which she admitted she's never even watched.
I think I'd be grossed out if I had to watch two characters with rolls and rolls of fat kissing each other... because I'd be grossed out if I had to watch them doing anything. To be brutally honest, even in real life, I find it aesthetically displeasing to watch a very, very fat person simply walk across a room- just like I'd find it distressing if I saw a very drunk person stumbling across a bar or a heroine [sic] addict slumping in a chair.
Roth joined in, slamming the hit show that is based around two overweight adults.
Mike & Molly is nothing more than a string of fat gags with a laugh track. It's a depressing and mean spirited show. Clichéd laugh gags with a fat track.
The reality is we've normalized obesity, glamorized obesity. Eating yourself into organ failure is no more glamorous than starving yourself into organ failure.
She tried to defend the writer of the blog by saying that being "repulsed" by morbidly obese people is a primal instinct.
The fact that this writer was repulsed by seeing romance between two morbidly obese people is a primal instinct. She knows that morbid obesity causes serious health issues. This is Darwin speaking, these are survival instincts that she's feeling that are driving this repulsion.
Since the admitted former anorexic author, Maura Kelly, wasn't "repulsed" by starving herself to a deathly thin size, how is being "repulsed" by obesity a primal instinct? Why is she not repulsed by starving a body to near death thinness?
This is America, so we have free speech, but how far is too far? Why do MeMe Roth and Maura Kelly feel the need to publicly speak out in such a hateful manner about obesity? Scroll down and post your opinion below.
